Neal,

I was born and raised in southwest Virginia — Galax to Roanoke to Flatridge. I came across your web site doing research for my next book, part of which focuses on the New River. My father was an attorney in Independence, VA. He worked with Congressman Bill Wampler, father of Senator William C. Wampler, to protect the New River from the dams the Blue Ridge Power Company wanted to build along the river in order to “flush out” the polluted Kanawha River.

The river was saved; the south fork was inducted into the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 1976; and the entire New River became an American Heritage River in July of 1998.

If you or someone you know has history with or a personal story about the battle over the New River, please contact me.

I’ve just been staying at home waiting for something to happen. I just don’t have much to say right now, but so it goes. I’ve basically been doing nothing to speak of, but shrug. Today was a loss. I don’t care. That’s how it is.

I am very new to blogs, having used them just a couple of times with students who were already accustomed to writing in them.

But I am excited at the possibility that this medium could help us share lessons, ideas, and materials after MyGateway goes down.

Neal,

You may not remember me, but this is Charlie from Good Sense. It’s good to finally find your new blog. At any rate, I would disagree with you on only one point. Bill Wampler, Jr. is the only politician currently holding office that would remotely have a chance against Congressman Boucher. In fact, I’ve said that for the past 12 years.

Congressman Boucher has had the luxury of not having been challenged by someone with a record of public service. I’ve supported my Republican candidates, but
as much as I like and respect Bill Carrico and Mike Osbourne and Mr. Triplett, a serious Republican challenger needs to have a record to run on.

At any rate, it’s good to see that you’re still blogging…
